Week in Review: Week 1
We've been in Europe for just over a week now, which is hard to believe. Time has flown by! Since landing last Thursday, we've spent time exploring around Frankfurt, made our way to the Germany/Czech border, and have been walking around Prague for the last couple of days.
Our week was filled with castles, cute wine villages in Germany, our first visit to the Czech Republic, colourful towns, grand churches, and time spent exploring beautiful old cities. This next week we are heading to northwest Czech Republic, Berlin, and northern Germany.
Before starting our second week we thought it would be nice to take some time to reflect on the past week, and highlight some of our favourite, and not so favourite, parts.
Highlight of the week
Sharleen: It's a tie between Eltz Castle and the day we spent walking around Hillesheim, DE, soaking in the sun and walking through the village surrounded by vineyards.
Darrell: Eltz Castle. The history, location of the castle, and the short hike we did after the tour definitely made it my favourite part.
Least favourite part of the week
Sharleen: Getting stuck in traffic for over two hours on our way from Hillesheim, DE to Cheb, CZ. When I say stuck, I literally mean we travelled 1 km in 2 hours.
Darrell: The flight getting to Europe was my least favourite. For the first time, I had difficulties sleeping on the plane, so it took a few days to get rested and back on a solid sleep schedule.
Favourite city/town/village visited
Sharleen and Darrell: Heidelberg, DE - we stopped here on our way to Cheb, CZ and had a great time! We had a meal in the Town Center, took a tram ride to the top of the hill to get an excellent view of the city, and explored the Heidelberg Castle. What was intended to be a quick breakfast, turned into a 5 hour pitstop, and even 5 hours didn't feel like enough time to spend in this beautiful town. The castle exceeded our expectations, which was surprising considering how much we love them. Definitely worth a stop if you are travelling nearby.
Favourite meal
Sharleen: a mix of local cheeses, deli meats, and fresh bread from the bakery near our Airbnb in Hillesheim. We love going to local grocery stores to build our own charcuterie boards with local ingredients, we are always looking to try new things! This one in particular had some pretty stinky cheese, so going forward we may be more cautious when the cheese description says "aromatisch".
Darrell: Paulaner Am Dom in Frankfurt. We had Rostbratwurst, which was a delicious plate of sausage, sauerkraut, potatoes, and mustard. How can you beat meat and potatoes!
The first week was full of amazing experiences, we can not wait to see what the second week has in store for us!
